Now the major difference between a Cloud Ready and a Classic printer is that in order to print to any Classic printers, the computer that has the printers installed has to be on and you have to be logged into Google Chrome. Any printer that you can print to from your computer can be added to GCP regardless of how it is connected. Classic Printers are either printers that are directly connected to your computer via a cable or wireless printers installed on your machine. Classic Printers are what most people will be using when setting up GCP. You basically just have to register your Google email address with GCP on the printer. If you do have one of the printers listed there, you can click on the link provided for setting it up with GCP. You can see the entire list of Cloud Ready Printers here: Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of printers out there yet that support GCP. The other great thing about Cloud Ready printers is that they will automatically update their firmware and drivers over the Internet, so you don’t even have to worry about it. This is by far the best way to use GCP because the printer will actually register itself with the GCP service over your network and will always be available for printing. Cloud Ready printers are those that already come with the GCP service installed and configured. There are two types of printers in the GCP world: Cloud Ready and Classic Printers. The main thing to understand about GCP is how you connect the printers to the actual service. Now that you understand where you can currently print from, let’s take a look at connecting printers to GCP. At this time, Google hasn’t released a Print Driver for Mac, but you can download an app called Cloud Printer which does pretty much the same thing. For example, on iOS, you can download PrintCentral Pro, which will let you print emails, contacts, text messages, etc from an iOS device to GCP. Lastly, there is a short list of apps that work with GCP and allow you to print from them. The Print Service is more geared towards businesses and schools. Cloud Print Service will run as a Windows service and can be used to connect older legacy printers to GCP. They also released Google Cloud Print Service in addition to Print Driver. You can install this on any Windows machine and it will allow you to choose Google Cloud Printer when printing from any Windows application. On July 23rd, 2013, Google really made GCP a lot more useful by introducing the Google Cloud Print Driver. As of right now, there is not a Cloud Print app in the Apple App store, but with Google’s great track record for releasing Google apps for iOS devices, there is a good chance we will see Cloud Print make it’s way to iPhones and iPads soon. Users can also manage printers, share printers, manage print jobs and more from the app. With this app, users can print a variety of local files directly to GCP including SMS chats, pictures, Facebook, Dropbox, Box, Mail and more. The first increase to this list was the Cloud Print app in the Google Play Store for Android devices. At first, you could only print from Chrome OS, Google Chrome on any platform and Gmail and Google Docs on your mobile. GCP sounds great, but you might be asking from where can I actually print from? Well, that’s where GCP has been making big leaps in the last year. So is GCP is the greatest thing in the world? Well, there are a few caveats and limitations that I will explain below. With GCP, you just install the Google Cloud Printer Driver on your Windows machine and you can now print from any program directly to any printer you have added in GCP. From here on out, I will refer to it as GCP. Now only does that take time and a lot of troubleshooting usually, it also slows down your system with a lot of extra printer software/tools you don’t need. For example, if you bought a new Windows PC and connected it to your network, you normally would have to find the drivers for your current printers, load the software and go through all the steps to get it installed on that PC.

Not only can that, if done properly, ensure portability across multiple platforms, but will also make it more easy for future maintenance. A paper / thesis on that topic was recently published (medium-sized PDF file ahead). Industry standard numerical libraries are developed for it foremost, other languages following more or less in the function/routines portfolio.Īll that being said, I would however (depends on when it was originally written) recommend if it is, let's say, F77 code or older, rewriting it partially through time to newer dialects - F90 at least, if possible with F2003 features. To not waste words, Fortran has a very fine gamma of "libraries" for parallelizing programs. I'm not familiar with the finer details, but people generally talk of it with praise.Īpart from that, for paralleling programs you have available OpenMP, MPI and now the upcoming (and long awaited) co-arrays, which Intel's compiler has recently implemented. If you're interested in CUDA, you might want to check Portland Group's compiler, which supports it. I would dare say that those 30 pages written in default Word text would make a more than comprehensive "Fortran manual" for most users. It is a language in which after learning 10 keywords, one can write medium-sized programs. My first textbook on it had no more than, oh I don't know, 30 (?) pages of sparse printed text. I don't agree that it takes time for bringing research assistants up to speed. It is also a language which is incredibly easy to pick up. One of Intel's representatives not far ago revealed that sales of their Fortran products are higher than any other in their development tools. The demands you have put actually put Fortran at the top of the list, for problems like this:Ĭ) it was and still is the de facto language taught outside of CS studies (to engineers who aren't professional programmers).ĭ) has an incredible(!) industry backing, number-of-industry-grade-compilers-wise, with none of the vendors showing the least signs of abandoning that branch. See Medical Imaging and a guy who has written a Fortran wrapper for CUDA, Can I legally publish my Fortran 90 wrappers to Nvidias' CUFFT library (from the CUDA SDK)?. Perhaps Python as that seems to be getting a stronghold in academia as a general-purpose programming language that is fairly easy to pick up. I liked the suggestion of keeping the pure number crunching in Fortran, but wrapping it in something newer. Bringing research assistants up to speed in Fortran takes time (I like C#, and especially the tooling and can't imagine going back to older languages!!) The reasons my friend is asking this question is that it's a perfect time in the projects lifecycle to do a review. UPDATE: Thanks and everyone who has answered. Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and many others in the Age of Enlightenment drew on the classical distinction to put forward metaphysical hypotheses such as "eternity is a permanent now". Thomas Aquinas believed that God's eternity does not cease, as it is without either a beginning or an end the concept of eternity is of divine simplicity, thus incapable of being defined or fully understood by humankind. Boethius defined eternity as "simultaneously full and perfect possession of interminable life". Some thinkers, such as Aristotle, suggest the eternity of the natural cosmos in regard to both past and future eternal duration. See also: Eternalism (philosophy of time) and Philosophy of space and timeĬlassical philosophy defines eternity as what exists outside time, as in describing timeless supernatural beings and forces, distinguished from sempiternity which corresponds to infinite time, as described in requiem prayers for the dead. This page is updated every weekday, excluding UK public holidays. You can still search from them, though: Try looking at San Marino and Andorra both European microstates have large proportions of their population affected. We hide countries with populations under 80,000 to avoid distorting the scale of population-adjusted charts. Try changing this setting while comparing Belgium to the US or China." Switching to the “per 100k” view won’t alter the shape of each country’s curve, but will reorder them relative to one another.Īdjusted for population, small countries with broad definitions for what cases or deaths to include in their data will look particularly badly affected, while epidemics concentrated in parts of a very populous country look surprisingly small. Later, though, viewing the values per 100,000 people gives a sense of the pandemic’s relative strain on countries’ resources. Population matters least in the early stages of an epidemic because cases are likely to be highly concentrated in particular regions like Hubei or Lombardy. Viruses don’t respect borders, and the rate at which they spread is not affected by the overall population of the affected country. Unusually for cross-national data, adjusting for population isn’t strictly necessary when analysing the speed at which a virus spreads. On the more familiar linear scale, the same data looks like a hockey stick shooting upwards, which gives a better sense of the overall size of each country’s epidemic. On a log scale, an epidemic looks like a steep diagonal line that flattens towards a horizontal line as its rate of growth slows. By comparing the slopes of two lines, a log scale allows us to compare epidemics at a very early stage with those that are much more advanced, even though they have very different absolute numbers of cases or deaths. Log scales are particularly suited to displaying trends in relative rates of change, like a virus spreading. The vertical axis of our charts are shown using a logarithmic scale, where the same distance on the scale represents multiplying or dividing by the same amount, instead of adding or subtracting the same amount as is the case with a linear scale. The FT is tracking excess mortality - the difference between deaths from all causes during the pandemic and the historic seasonal average - in the handful of countries and municipalities that publish suitably recent data, and has reported on the specific circumstances in Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and the UK." Logarithmic or linear scales Some countries like France and the UK have even changed which deaths they include during the course of the epidemic.įor either measure, we use a seven-day rolling average to adjust for the impact of administrative delays to reporting new data over weekends. The most notable difference between countries’ Covid mortality figures is whether or not they include deaths outside hospitals, particularly in care homes. Confirmed case counts depend heavily on the extent of countries’ very different testing regimes, so higher totals may simply reflect more testing.ĭeaths are somewhat more reliable, but remain problematic because countries have different rules for what deaths to include in their official numbers. Comparing the spread of coronavirus in different countries is difficult using the data being released by governments. “I’m already gone,” Eric heartbreakingly replied while lying on the floor. Finally Bill grew tired of Eric’s verbal abuse and levitated him across the room (for which Eric hilariously mocked him) and then banished Eric from his home. With an unfocused snarl Eric shouted at Bill so much about how he sucked in general, and it was to Bill’s credit that he remained mostly empathetic throughout. Like any distraught, grieving brother, he immediately raged at the nearest vampire messiah and the ensuing confrontation was as nasty and intense as any Tennessee Williams Act Four barn-burner. In a scene that would set the tone for the episode to follow, “Dead Meat” began immediately after Nora dissolved into a sad pile of fail in Eric’s lap. Save for one truly incredible, instant classic of a scene, this episode was much more about emotional bonding than your typical True Blood late season circus and continued the season’s hot streak even while cooling things down. No fewer than three vampires promised/threatened eternity to others in “Dead Meat,” and each declaration felt weirder than the last. Whether it terrifies you or turns you on, Forever doesn’t exist! But this week’s episode of True Blood bandied about the concept in ways that might terrify both genders and above all else reaffirmed the fact that vampires are intense, man. Everybody just needs to relax about the concept of Forever, already. Just as upsetting is the flipside: Lady-targeted entertainment in which literal monsters remove women’s agency by forcing love and protection onto them forever and it’s considered wish fulfillment? Uh, okay, weirdos. Ladies who openly seek long-term relationships are walking nightmares to be avoided or derided? Got it, dude. The psycho girlfriend trope has been a tired, misogynistic cliché for a while now, but its persistence in bro humor says a lot about how certain guys might think. |
